Chapter 23 - High Society

"Leo, I'm here!" Elara shouted, tears of intense relief finally welling in her eyes. "Stay right there, sweetheart. I'm coming up to get you."
She dragged a heavy velvet dining chair onto the mahogany table, using it as a makeshift ladder to reach the low-hanging architectural beams of the ceiling. With incredible agility born of pure adrenaline, she hoisted herself onto the beam, balancing precariously above the shattered glass and unconscious guards below.
She reached into the dark ventilation shaft. "Leo, grab my hand. We have to go right now."
A small, soot-covered hand emerged from the darkness, gripping her fingers with desperate, trembling strength. Elara pulled gently, and her son slid out of the metal tubing, his face streaked with tears and dust. She wrapped her arms tightly around him, burying her face in his hair, overwhelmed by the physical reality of having him back.
"I knew you'd come," Leo sobbed into her shoulder. "I didn't take their medicine, Mom. I fought them."
"You were so brave, my strong boy," Elara whispered fiercely, kissing his forehead. "But we have to be brave for just a little bit longer. We have to get out of this building."
She lowered Leo carefully down to the table, then jumped down beside him.
"Elara!" Julian’s voice panicked over the radio. "Victoria is on the move. She’s leaving her command center on floor 38 and heading straight for the roof. She’s taking her personal security detail. Her helicopter is landing in three minutes to extract her before the feds arrive."
"She's trying to run," Elara growled, her grip tightening on the baton.
"The police have breached the ground floor," Julian continued rapidly. "The news outlets have confirmed the data leak. The FBI is literally kicking the front doors in. If you can get to the roof and delay her, they will arrest her on the helipad."
Elara looked down at Leo, her heart tearing in two directions. Protect her child, or ensure the monster who tortured her family never saw the light of day again.
"Leo," Elara said softly, crouching to his eye level. "I need you to run back to the elevator and find Julian. He is a good man. He will protect you."

"No!" Leo cried, grabbing her hoodie. "Don't leave me!"
"I will be right behind you," she lied, forcing a reassuring smile. "I just have to say goodbye to your grandmother."
