Chapter 25 - Checkmate

The rain washed the soot and blood from Elara’s face as she stood triumphant on the helipad. Federal agents swarmed past her, tackling Victoria’s bodyguards to the wet tarmac and securing their wrists in heavy zip-ties.
"Victoria Vanguard, you are under arrest for conspiracy, human trafficking, and multiple counts of murder," an FBI supervisor declared loudly, stepping up to the elderly matriarch.
Victoria refused to acknowledge the agent. Her piercing, icy gaze remained fixated solely on Elara. "The data you leaked is complex," she hissed, her voice barely audible over the roaring storm. "My lawyers will tie this up in courts for decades. I will buy the judges. I will buy the juries. I am untouchable."
Elara walked slowly toward her, ignoring the warnings of the federal agents. She stopped inches from Victoria’s face.
"You don't get it, do you?" Elara said softly, her voice carrying a profound, chilling finality. "Silas didn't just leak it to the authorities. He leaked it to your international rivals. He sent your proprietary research to the cartels you double-crossed. You don't have to worry about the judges, Victoria. You have to worry about the people you stole from."
For the first time in Elara’s entire life, she saw true, unadulterated fear flash across her grandmother’s aristocratic features. The realization of her absolute vulnerability hit Victoria like a physical blow. The briefcase slipped from her trembling fingers, hitting the wet concrete and popping open, scattering useless corporate documents into the wind.
"Take her away," the FBI supervisor commanded.
Two agents grabbed Victoria roughly by the arms, marching the defeated billionaire toward the stairwell. She looked old, fragile, and utterly broken.

Elara watched her go, a massive, suffocating weight finally lifting from her chest. The nightmare was over. The legacy was destroyed.
She turned away from the helicopter, the adrenaline slowly leaving her battered body, replaced by a profound, bone-deep exhaustion. She walked slowly back down the concrete stairs, leaving the flashing lights and chaos of the rooftop behind. She only had one destination left in mind.
