Chapter 8 - The Labyrinth

Elara slipped into the harshly lit corridor, pressing her back against the cold, white plaster wall. The hospital wing was oddly deserted, a clear sign that Victoria had already used her immense influence to clear the floor of unnecessary personnel. Security cameras stared down from the ceiling like dead, mechanical eyes, their red recording lights blinking rhythmically, searching for anomalies.
"Think, Elara, think," she muttered under her breath, pulling the hood lower over her face to shield her identity.
She knew the blind spots. She had spent the last six months working undercover as a night nurse here, meticulously mapping every inch of the facility for this exact moment. She sprinted across the dangerous gap between two wards, diving into a linen closet just as a pair of heavy, tactical boots rounded the corner.
"Check the stairwells," a gruff voice echoed down the hall, the sound of a radio crackling in the background. "The old lady wants this place stripped down to the studs. If she's here, we find her."
"What about the local cops?" a second voice asked, sounding distinctly nervous.
"We own the cops," the first man scoffed, his tone dripping with arrogance. "Just do your job and keep your weapon ready."
Elara held her breath, the strong smell of bleach and fresh cotton filling her nostrils, threatening to make her sneeze. She waited until the heavy footsteps faded into the distance. Victoria’s reach was terrifyingly vast. The 'legacy' she was so desperately protecting was a vast network of illegal genetic trials, and this prestigious hospital was ground zero for the atrocities. If Elara couldn't get the encrypted drives to the international press, Leo would be trapped in that toxic family forever, used as just another pawn in Victoria's twisted, endless games.
Elara pushed the closet door open and slipped out, heading toward the service elevator at the end of the hall. It required a high-level keycard, one she had stolen from a senior administrator weeks ago. She swiped it with a trembling hand, praying the access hadn't been revoked yet.

Beep. Green light.
The metallic doors slid open, and she stepped inside, slamming her fist against the button for the sub-basement. As the elevator began its descent, a profound sense of dread washed over her. The real nightmare was only just beginning.
