Chapter 19 - Digital Warfare

The fire escape was slick with freezing rain. Elara and Julian scrambled upward, the metal grating trembling under their desperate weight. Below them, the sound of sustained automatic gunfire drowned out the roaring thunder. Silas was making his final stand, buying them precious seconds with his life.

"He's dead," Julian gasped, slipping on a wet rung and slamming his knee hard against the iron rail. "They’re going to kill him."

"Keep moving!" Elara yelled, hauling him up by the collar. "If we stop, his death means absolutely nothing."

They reached the rooftop just as an explosion rocked the floor below, sending a plume of thick black smoke billowing out of Silas’s window. Elara didn't look back. She sprinted across the tar-paper roof, Julian limping heavily behind her.

"The gap!" Julian shouted, pointing to the four-foot chasm separating their building from the adjacent apartment block.

"Jump!" Elara ordered.

She took a running leap, clearing the gap easily and rolling onto the gravel roof of the neighboring building. Julian hesitated for a fraction of a second, terrified, before hurling himself forward. He landed short, his upper body hitting the concrete ledge, his legs dangling over a fifty-foot drop into the dark alley below.

Elara lunged forward, grabbing his coat with both hands. With a guttural scream of effort, she heaved backward, pulling Julian onto the safety of the roof just as a sleek black drone rose over the ledge, its camera lens glowing an eerie, hostile red.

Elara reacted instinctively. She threw her heavy steel flashlight with perfect precision. It smashed into the drone’s central rotor, sending the machine spiraling downward to crash in the alley below.

"Come on," she panted, pulling Julian to his feet. They hurried down the roof access stairs of the new building, disappearing into the dark, silent hallways.

In her pocket, Elara’s phone vibrated violently. She pulled it out, her screen filled with a single, automated text message from Silas’s server: UPLOAD COMPLETE. FILES DISTRIBUTED TO 400 GLOBAL OUTLETS. GIVE HER HELL.

Elara stared at the screen, a fierce, triumphant smile breaking through her exhaustion. The digital war was won. Now, it was time for the physical one.
