Chapter 16 - Through the Fire

Silas lowered the shotgun slowly, his eyes darting between Julian and the soaked, intense woman standing beside him. He stepped back, allowing them to climb through the window into a chaotic apartment filled with towering stacks of newspapers, humming server towers, and glowing monitors.

"You actually did it," Silas whispered, bolting the window shut and drawing heavy blackout curtains. "You actually breached her mainframe."

"Elara did," Julian said, gesturing to her. "Elara, this is Silas. Silas, this is Elara... Victoria’s granddaughter."

Silas froze, his hand tightening around the grip of his shotgun. "You brought a member of that cursed bloodline into my house?"

"She's on our side!" Julian interjected, stepping between them. "Victoria kidnapped her son tonight. She’s going to use him for the final trial of the neuro-regeneration project."

Silas stared at Elara, searching her face for any sign of deception. What he found was only raw, unadulterated desperation and a fierce maternal rage. He slowly set the weapon down on a cluttered desk.

"Do you have the drive?" Silas asked, his voice trembling slightly with anticipation.

Elara reached into her pocket and placed the silver USB drive on the table. "Can you decrypt it?"

Silas scoffed, sitting down at his primary workstation. "I've been writing decryption algorithms for her proprietary network for three years. Give me thirty minutes. But once I plug this in, her digital tripwires might alert her to our general location. We'll be on a ticking clock."

"Do it," Elara said without hesitation. "Leak it to every major news outlet, every federal agency, and every international human rights watchdog on the planet."

As Silas inserted the drive, lines of complex code began to cascade down his massive monitors. "Decryption initiated," he announced. "Now, we wait and pray."

Suddenly, the encrypted police scanner in the corner of the room crackled to life. "Attention all units. Be advised, we have a confirmed code red at the Vanguard Tower. A child is loose in the building. Lock down all exits. Non-lethal force authorized."

Elara’s blood ran cold. "Vanguard Tower... that's Victoria's corporate penthouse."

"Leo," she breathed, panic finally breaking through her composed exterior. "He got away from them. He's running."
