Chapter 12 - Echoes in the Dark

The ventilation shaft was cramped, suffocating, and reeked of rust and stagnant water. Elara crawled on her hands and knees, the metal grating scraping painfully against her shins with every desperate movement. Julian was right behind her, his harsh, ragged breathing echoing loudly in the enclosed space.
"Keep moving!" Julian urged, his voice tight with panic. "They’re going to pump gas into the vents if they can't follow us."
"I'm going as fast as I can!" Elara shot back, suppressing a cough as a cloud of ancient dust hit her face.
The shaft descended steeply, forcing them to slide down a near-vertical drop that deposited them into a cavernous, brick-lined tunnel. The air here was damp and freezing, smelling strongly of the nearby river. Elara stood up, brushing the dirt from her hoodie, and switched on her flashlight. The beam cut through the darkness, revealing a labyrinth of old steam pipes and crumbling brickwork.
"Where exactly are we?" Elara asked, shining the light down three different branching paths.
"The old municipal drainage system," Julian explained, pulling a crumpled, hand-drawn map from his coat pocket. "The hospital was built over it in the seventies. Victoria tried to have these sealed, but the city pushed back. If we follow the main aqueduct north, we should come out near the old industrial district, completely outside Victoria's security perimeter."
Elara leaned against the damp wall, closing her eyes for a brief moment. The image of Leo crying, being dragged away by those massive men, flashed violently in her mind. Her chest tightened with a physical ache.
"We got the data, Elara," Julian said softly, holding up the small silver USB drive. "This is the silver bullet. Patient records, illegal funding trails, genetic sequencing logs. Everything. When this goes public, Victoria’s empire will crumble in hours."

"It doesn't matter if she hurts my son before it leaks," Elara replied, her voice dangerously calm. "We need a safe house, and we need to upload this immediately. Who can we trust with the decryption?"
Julian smiled grimly. "I know a guy. A rogue journalist who has been trying to nail Victoria for a decade. He lives entirely off the grid. If anyone can get this out, it's him. Let's move."
