Chapter 8 - The Broken Widow

My lead attorney, Marcus, slid a glossy brochure across the polished wood of his conference table. It was for a highly exclusive, intensely private psychiatric recovery clinic nestled in the mountains upstate.
"If we want to build an airtight case without tipping him off, you need to disappear," Marcus advised, his voice gentle but firm. "Give Daniel exactly the image he wants. He expects you to break down. If you fight him now, he'll scramble to cover his digital tracks. Let him think he's won."
I agreed. That afternoon, I packed a single duffel bag and checked into the clinic under Marcus's strict advice. I handed over my cell phone to the nurses, playing the role of the shattered, broken widow hidden behind locked doors and heavy medication.
But my room at the clinic had a private, unmonitored landline and an encrypted laptop Marcus had smuggled in with my luggage.

While Daniel paraded Vanessa around town and spent the company's money, my legal and forensic teams went to work. From the quiet sanctuary of the clinic, I orchestrated a massive, silent investigation. My lawyers moved swiftly, legally preserving the off-site servers, issuing quiet subpoenas for Daniel's hidden bank records, and securing all municipal traffic footage around the lake house from the night of the fire.
My hidden advantage was not wealth. Daniel had temporarily frozen my primary accounts. My advantage was pure architecture. I had built his entire technological empire from the inside out. I knew every backdoor, every hidden firewall, and every automated backup protocol. While Daniel played king in the penthouse, the "technician" was quietly mining the data that would send him to prison.
