Chapter 23 - The Intruder at the Sanctuary

The crisp autumn air at the Emma and Ethan Mercer Memorial Retreat usually brought a profound sense of calm. The sprawling wooden lodge, with its massive stone fireplace and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lake, was designed to foster healing. But as I arrived that Friday afternoon, the sanctuary felt uniquely violated.

The retreat's director, a kind woman named Sarah, met me in the driveway with a deeply unsettled expression.

"We had a strange visitor this morning," Sarah reported, handing me a visitor log. "A man. He didn't have an appointment, and he wasn't part of any bereaved family group. He claimed he was a freelance journalist writing a piece on philanthropic architecture."

"Did he give a name?" I asked, scanning the ledger.

"Silas Vance," Sarah replied. "He asked an excessive amount of questions about the property's funding. He wanted to know exactly how much of your personal corporate revenue was funneled into the construction. He even tried to access the private administrative office before security asked him to leave."

The surname struck me like a physical blow. Vance. As in Sterling, Vance, & Caldwell. Daniel’s appellate law firm.

"He isn't a journalist," I said, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. "He is an investigator for Daniel’s lawyers. They are looking for financial leverage. They want to find a discrepancy in the retreat's funding to smear my reputation."

"Should I call the police?" Sarah asked, looking nervously toward the main gates.

"No. They will just claim he was conducting a public record inquiry," I replied, pulling my phone from my purse. "Increase the perimeter patrols. Nobody enters the grounds without a pre-approved digital pass. I am putting the entire retreat on a severe lockdown."

I walked down to the edge of the lake, looking out at the gentle ripples of the water. The silver butterfly pendant at my throat felt heavy. Daniel was sitting in a concrete box, yet he was still trying to reach his toxic fingers into the one place he had no right to touch. He wanted to taint my children's sanctuary.

"You aren't taking this from me," I whispered to the wind. "I will burn you to ashes first."
