Chapter 33 - The Appellate Hearing

The federal appellate courthouse in downtown Chicago was a massive, imposing structure of polished marble and dark mahogany. The gallery was packed with reporters, legal analysts, and curious onlookers eager to witness the final chapter of the Mercer scandal.

I sat in the front row, directly behind the prosecution’s table, flanked by my mother and Elias. I wore a sharp, tailored black suit. I wasn't here to mourn; I was here to witness an execution.

Daniel was escorted into the courtroom through a side door by two heavily armed US Marshals. He was wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, his hands and ankles bound by heavy steel chains. He looked gaunt, pale, and incredibly furious. He glanced toward the gallery, his eyes locking onto mine.

I did not flinch. I held his gaze with an absolute, terrifying emptiness, letting him see that he held absolutely no power over me anymore.

The lead attorney from Sterling, Vance, & Caldwell stood at the podium. He was a slick, expensive lawyer who specialized in manufacturing doubt.

"Your Honor," the lawyer began, his voice dripping with practiced confidence. "We submit that the original conviction of Daniel Mercer was fatally flawed. The prosecution relied on financial documents illegally obtained by his ex-wife, bypassing secure servers without authorization. This constitutes a severe breach of privacy and an illegal search. The financial motive must be stricken, and my client must be granted a mistrial."

The three-judge appellate panel listened with stoic, unreadable expressions. The entire room seemed to hold its breath.

Daniel offered a small, arrogant smirk from the defense table. He actually believed his expensive shark was going to set him free. He believed the technicality would override the truth.

He had no idea that the prosecutor was holding a live grenade.
