Chapter 28 - The Press Leak

The brutal counter-attack began two days later, exploding across the morning news cycle like a coordinated bomb.

I was sitting in the retreat's dining hall, watching a local news broadcast, when my own face flashed across the screen. The headline beneath it read: Memorial Sanctuary or Corporate Tax Haven?

"Sources close to the Mercer legal team have leaked documents suggesting that the Emma and Ethan Mercer Memorial Retreat was allegedly constructed using embezzled corporate funds," the news anchor reported with practiced severity. "The defense team for the disgraced former CEO, Daniel Mercer, claims that his ex-wife built the multi-million-dollar lakeside property not as a charity, but as an elaborate offshore tax shelter to hide her own financial crimes."

I stared at the screen in absolute, horrified disbelief.

"They forged documents," my mother gasped, covering her mouth with trembling hands. "They are trying to poison the public's perception of Emma and Ethan’s sanctuary."

Marcus burst into the dining hall, his phone pressed to his ear. "It’s a coordinated smear campaign," he announced, hanging up. "Silas fed a fabricated narrative to three major tabloids and a business blog. They are claiming that you framed Daniel for the original embezzlement to cover up your own massive financial irregularities, and that the retreat is just a front to wash the stolen money."

My chest tightened so painfully I could barely breathe. They weren't just attacking me. They were attacking the pure, innocent memory of my children. They were trying to twist the one beautiful thing I had built from their ashes into a dirty, greedy corporate scheme.

"Will the public believe this?" my mother asked, her voice cracking with despair.

"People love a scandal, especially when it involves a wealthy widow," Marcus warned grimly. "If we don't control this narrative immediately, the foundation’s board of directors might panic and freeze the retreat's operating budget pending an investigation."

I stood up from the table, my sorrow instantly transmuting into a cold, terrifying rage.

"Schedule a press conference," I commanded, my voice devoid of any hesitation. "Right here, at the retreat. Invite every major news outlet in the state. I am not going to hide behind a PR statement."
