Chapter 11 - The District Attorney's Doubt

Armed with the digital logs, the traffic camera footage, the insurance documents, and Emma’s heartbreaking smartwatch recording, my lawyer arranged a covert meeting with the county District Attorney. They met in a secure room at the courthouse, laying out the mountain of evidence we had meticulously gathered.
I waited by the phone in my clinic room for hours, my nerves frayed. Finally, Marcus called.
"She believes us," Marcus said immediately, though his tone was heavy with frustration. "She looked sick when she heard the watch recording. But she's hesitant to pull the trigger on an arrest warrant just yet."
"Why?" I demanded, gripping the phone tightly. "We have the timeline. We have the motive. We have his voice on tape."
"Because Daniel is wealthy and his defense team is ruthless," Marcus explained patiently. "The DA said the motive and the digital logs are strong, but a good defense attorney will claim the logs were corrupted or tampered with by a vengeful wife with a tech background. They will argue the audio on the watch is a deepfake, or taken out of context. To secure a conviction for double homicide against a man with unlimited resources, she says we need something human. We need a confession. We need him to slip up on record."

I leaned back against the stark white pillows of my clinic bed, staring at the ceiling. Daniel was too careful with his phones and his emails. He wouldn't confess to the police. But he was incredibly arrogant, and he severely underestimated me.
"Alright," I told Marcus, my voice dropping to a cool, dangerous register. "If she needs him to become reckless, I'll give him an opportunity he can't resist."
