Chapter 29 - The Press Conference

The afternoon sun cast long, defiant shadows across the manicured lawns of the retreat. A massive podium had been set up directly in front of the grand wooden entrance, right beneath the gleaming bronze plaque bearing my children’s names.
Dozens of reporters, cameramen, and journalists swarmed the driveway, their microphones thrust forward like weapons. I stood behind the closed doors of the lodge, taking a deep, steadying breath. Elias stood beside me, his eyes scanning the crowd for any sign of Silas Vance.
"You are ready for this," my mother whispered, squeezing my shoulder.
I pushed the heavy doors open and walked out into the blinding flashes of the cameras. I did not wear mourning black, and I did not wear corporate gray. I wore a brilliant, pristine white suit. I wanted them to see absolute clarity.
I stepped up to the microphone. The aggressive shouting of the reporters instantly died down, replaced by a heavy, expectant silence.
"This morning, a coordinated, vicious smear campaign was launched against this foundation," I began, my voice echoing powerfully over the speakers. "They accused me of building this sanctuary for grieving families as a tax shelter. They claimed I was hiding stolen money."
I reached into my briefcase and pulled out a thick stack of certified, heavily audited financial documents. I held them up for the cameras.
"These are the unredacted, fully transparent financial ledgers for the Emma and Ethan Mercer Memorial Retreat. Every single penny used to build this sanctuary came from my personal, heavily taxed architectural commissions, and from legitimate, vetted philanthropic grants. I am releasing these records to the public immediately."
A reporter from the front row shouted, "Then why is Daniel Mercer’s legal team claiming otherwise?"

I leaned into the microphone, my eyes blazing with fierce, unapologetic truth.
"Because Daniel Mercer is currently funding a multi-million-dollar legal appeal using an illegal offshore account in the Cayman Islands," I stated, dropping the bomb that silenced the entire lawn. "He is desperate. He is terrified. And he is utilizing a known corporate fixer named Silas Vance to intimidate me into silence. I will not be silenced. I will not let a convicted monster taint the memory of my children."
