Chapter 24 - The Hidden Blueprint

I drove straight from the retreat back to the corporate headquarters. If Silas Vance was digging into my current financials, I needed to dig into Daniel’s past.
I locked myself inside the corporate archives room in the basement of our building. For six hours, I meticulously combed through every single architectural draft, renovation invoice, and structural schematic that Daniel had ever commissioned during his tenure as CEO.
If he had hidden physical ledgers, burner phones, or offshore banking tokens, he wouldn't trust them in a bank vault where a warrant could reach them. He would hide them in a place he believed he had absolute control over.
At midnight, my eyes burning from the harsh fluorescent lights, I found it.
It was a seemingly innocuous work order from three years ago. It detailed a minor renovation to the executive suite—my current office. The invoice claimed it was for "acoustic reinforcement and HVAC rerouting." But as an architect, I knew the spatial dimensions didn't align with the materials ordered.
I pulled the original structural blueprint and overlaid it with the renovation draft.
There it was. A discrepancy of exactly fourteen inches behind the custom mahogany bookshelves on the west wall. Fourteen inches of dead space that didn't exist on the original building plans.
"You arrogant fool," I whispered in the empty room.
He hadn't just hidden money. He had built a physical vault right behind his desk, assuming he would rule the company forever.

I grabbed a heavy flashlight and a crowbar from the maintenance closet and took the private elevator up to the executive suite. The city below was asleep, but my adrenaline was surging. I walked over to the towering mahogany bookshelves, running my hands along the ornate wooden trim. I felt for seams, pressure plates, or hidden hinges.
At the very bottom corner, concealed behind a thick baseboard, my fingers brushed against a tiny, biometric fingerprint scanner. The vault was real. And Daniel’s secrets were waiting just inches away.
