Chapter 5 - The Voice of Betrayal

Sitting in my dark office the night before the funeral, I had clicked on that tiny, twelve-second audio file recovered from Emma's smartwatch. My hand hovered over the mouse, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I pressed play, expecting to hear the horrifying sound of alarms or the hiss of a broken valve.
Instead, I heard voices.
A man’s voice, clear and chillingly calm, drifted through the speakers. "Once she is blamed, the company comes to us."
It was Daniel.
A woman’s voice replied, laced with a terrifying, casual curiosity. "And the children?"
It was Vanessa.
Then Daniel answered, his tone completely devoid of warmth, empathy, or hesitation. Cold and impatient, a father sealing the fate of his own flesh and blood.
"They are already asleep."

I had sat in the dark for hours after the audio clipped to silence. I listened to it on a loop, the sound of my husband calmly condemning our children to death echoing in the empty room. I listened until the tears finally stopped. I listened until the suffocating, crushing weight of my grief began to crystallize into something entirely different. The soft, broken pieces of my heart stopped shattering and fused together, turning into cold, unyielding steel.
At the funeral, Daniel continued to perform his grief beautifully for the crowd. He cried without producing a single tear. He took the podium and delivered a eulogy where he called himself a devastated, broken father. He subtly painted me as unstable, negligent, and selfish, a woman who cared more for alcohol than her own babies. The crowd ate it up, their eyes darting toward me in judgment. But I just stood there, the steel in my spine holding me perfectly upright.
