Chapter 33 - The Severed Tie

The confrontation on the sidewalk shattered the last remaining illusions the Kensington family held. Richard realized that his daughter could no longer be manipulated, intimidated, or bought. Faced with the undeniable reality of federal prison for wire fraud, forgery, and extortion, Richard’s legal team offered a complete, unconditional surrender.
We demanded absolute capitulation.
A week later, we sat in a private arbitration room at the federal courthouse to finalize the settlement. Richard did not attend; he was reportedly heavily medicated and under house arrest pending the FBI’s parallel investigation. His lawyers sat silently, looking utterly defeated.
Marcus slid the massive, hundred-page settlement agreement across the table.
"Let's review the terms," Marcus said, his voice clipped and professional. "Kensington Holdings agrees to fully restitute the eighty million dollars embezzled from Juliet Kensington's trust, plus an additional twenty million in punitive damages and legal fees. Furthermore, Richard Kensington relinquishes all parental rights, proxy controls, and corporate ties to Juliet."
"My client agrees to the financial restitution," the lead defense attorney sighed, adjusting his glasses. "But the complete severing of proxy controls is aggressive. He wants to maintain a non-voting advisory role in her future investments."
"Absolutely not," I intervened, my voice cutting through the room like a blade. "He does not get to keep a foot in the door. He is a predator. The tie is severed completely, permanently, and irrevocably. If he refuses this specific term, we leave this room right now, and the FBI indictments drop at noon."
The defense attorney swallowed hard, realizing I was not bluffing. He pulled out a gold pen and signed the document on behalf of his client.
Juliet sat beside me, staring at the signed document. She reached out with trembling fingers, picking up a pen. She signed her own name with a deliberate, beautiful flourish.
"It's done," Marcus confirmed, closing the folder.
As we walked out of the courthouse, the bright midday sun washed over us. Juliet stopped on the steps, looking up at the blue sky.
"I'm free," she whispered, as if testing the words on her tongue for the very first time. "I am actually free."

"You are," I smiled, putting an arm around her shoulder. "Your life belongs entirely to you now. No one can ever take it away again."
We had fought the monsters in the high-society ballrooms, and we had won. The Vanguard Agency had balanced another ledger.
