Chapter 25 - Unearthing the Ledger

As Daniel melted seamlessly into the crowd, heading toward the restricted corridors of the estate, I grabbed a glass of champagne from a passing waiter and positioned myself perfectly in Richard Kensington's line of sight. I projected an aura of absolute, undeniable wealth and confidence, the exact kind of energy that attracted men like him.

It didn't take long. Within five minutes, Richard excused himself from his sycophants and approached me, his eyes gleaming with greedy curiosity.

"I don't believe we've had the pleasure," Richard said smoothly, offering a charismatic smile that didn't reach his cold, calculating eyes. "I am Richard Kensington. Welcome to my home."

"Eleanor Sterling," I replied, using my alias and offering my hand. "My firm in London has been watching your commercial developments with great interest, Richard. We are always looking for aggressive portfolios to absorb."

His posture immediately straightened. The mention of foreign capital was blood in the water for a man drowning in hidden debt. "Is that so? Well, Eleanor, you have certainly come to the right place. Kensington Holdings is preparing for a massive, unprecedented expansion next quarter."

"Fascinating," I smiled, keeping my tone perfectly conversational while listening intensely to the earpiece.

"I am at the study door," Daniel's voice crackled quietly in my ear. "Bypassing the biometric lock now. It’s a standard retinal cipher. Give me sixty seconds."

"I would love to hear more about your expansion strategies, Richard," I continued, holding his gaze. "Particularly how you manage to leverage so much capital without triggering federal liquidity audits. It’s quite... magical."

Richard chuckled, though a flicker of unease crossed his face. "Trade secrets, my dear. We have excellent relationships with our private lenders."

"I'm in," Daniel reported through the comms. "Connecting the cloning drive to the primary router. Data extraction is at twenty percent."

Suddenly, Victoria Kensington, Richard's wife, appeared at his side. She was a frail, heavily manicured woman with sharp, judgmental eyes. She looked at me with immediate suspicion.

"Richard, darling, the caterers are asking about the second course," Victoria interrupted, placing a possessive hand on his arm.

"Not now, Victoria," Richard snapped, his charismatic mask slipping for a fraction of a second to reveal the tyrant beneath. He turned back to me. "Please excuse my wife. As I was saying, our portfolio is completely bulletproof."

"Extraction complete," Daniel's voice rang out, full of triumph. "I have the shadow ledger. I am wiping my digital footprints and moving back to the extraction point."

"I am sure it is," I smiled genuinely at Richard, raising my champagne glass. "I look forward to examining it very closely. Enjoy your evening, Richard."

I turned and walked away, leaving him standing in the middle of the ballroom, completely unaware that I held the keys to his destruction.
