Chapter 28 - A Conversation in the Dark

The failed intimidation tactic sent a clear message to Richard Kensington: the Vanguard Agency could not be bullied, bought, or broken. Following the incident with the fixer, Richard retreated into a paranoid silence. His high-priced defense attorneys began filing desperate, frivolous motions to unfreeze his accounts, claiming the digital evidence was fabricated.

To secure Juliet's absolute safety, we had moved her to a highly secure, off-the-grid safe house owned by our firm, located on the outskirts of the city. She was guarded 24/7 by our top personnel.

On Thursday night, I drove out to the safe house to check on her. The property was quiet, surrounded by dense woods. Inside, Juliet was sitting by the fireplace, wrapped in a thick blanket, staring into the flames.

I sat down in the armchair next to her, handing her a mug of hot chocolate.

"How are you holding up?" I asked gently.

"I feel... strange," Juliet admitted, wrapping her hands around the warm mug. "For my entire life, I woke up every morning terrified of what mood my father would be in. I was constantly walking on eggshells, trying not to trigger an explosion. And now... it's just quiet. It's almost too quiet."

"Peace can feel terrifying when you are used to a war zone," I said softly, understanding her entirely. "Your nervous system is still waiting for the other shoe to drop. It takes time for your body to realize that the monster is actually locked outside the gates."

Juliet looked at me, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "My mother called me today. She bypassed the block on my phone by using a burner number. She was crying. She told me my father is having chest pains from the stress. She begged me to drop the lawsuit, saying I was destroying the family."

My jaw tightened. The manipulation of the enabling parent was often far more insidious than the violence of the primary abuser.

"What did you tell her?" I asked.

"I told her that the family was destroyed the day they decided to steal my future," Juliet said, her voice trembling but resolute. "And then I hung up."

I reached out and placed my hand over hers. "I am so incredibly proud of you, Juliet. They will use guilt, they will use tears, and they will use fear to drag you back. But you held the line."

"I held the line," she repeated, a small, genuine smile breaking through her anxiety. "Are we going to win, Nora?"

"We have the shadow ledger. We have the forged signatures. We have the federal judge on our side," I promised her, looking into the fire. "We aren't just going to win. We are going to make sure he never hurts anyone again."
