Chapter 1 - The Bridal Suite and the Ghosts of the Past

The first sound of this marriage was not sweet music, nor was it the joyous applause of celebrating guests. It was the sickening crack of my nose breaking against the cold, unforgiving marble floor, accompanied by the cruel, echoing laughter of my own father from above.

But to understand that horrific moment, we must go back about an hour, when I was still sitting in the quiet sanctuary of the bridal suite. The white silk satin wedding gown hugged my body perfectly, adorned with thousands of tiny, shimmering crystals that caught the warm golden light. It was an incredibly expensive dress, a dream that any girl would covet. But to me, it felt like a fragile suit of armor, prepared for a war I knew was inevitable.

I looked at my reflection in the mirror, seeing a girl with her hair styled in an elaborate, elegant updo, her eyes meticulously painted but unable to hide the deep, bone-weary exhaustion beneath. For twenty-five years, my life had been a relentless cycle of paying off debts, carrying the burdens and consequences of my toxic family’s greed. I was all too used to being exploited, used, and treated as nothing more than a personal ATM.

The door to the suite opened, and Daniel walked in. He wore a perfectly tailored black tuxedo that accentuated his tall, athletic frame and calm, reassuring face. Daniel Whitmore was not just a man from an incredibly wealthy, high-society family. He was the first person in my entire life who looked at me as a real human being. He listened when I spoke without interrupting, without demanding, and without judging. When I was with him, I wasn't "the daughter carrying the family debt." I was simply Lena.

"Are you ready?" Daniel asked softly, stepping behind me and resting his hands gently on my shoulders. The warmth from his palms radiated through the thin silk, bringing a sense of safety I had never felt before.

I took a deep breath, locking eyes with him in the mirror. "As long as you’re with me, I’m always ready."

But deep in my heart, I knew tonight wouldn't just be about roses and champagne. My family—the hungry wolves—were waiting right outside. And I, too, had prepared a wedding gift for them that they would never, ever forget.
