Chapter 29 - Daniel's Anchor

I returned home late that night, the adrenaline of the week finally beginning to recede, leaving a deep, bone-aching exhaustion in its wake. The penthouse was quiet, illuminated only by the soft, ambient lights of the city skyline pouring through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
I dropped my keys on the counter and walked into the kitchen. Daniel was standing by the stove, warming up a plate of dinner he had saved for me. He turned around, his eyes immediately scanning my face, assessing the toll the day had taken on me.
"You look exhausted," Daniel said softly, walking over and wrapping his arms securely around my waist, pulling me against his chest.
"I am," I admitted, resting my forehead against his shoulder, breathing in the familiar, comforting scent of cedar and clean laundry. "Juliet's mother tried to manipulate her today. It brought back a lot of memories. It reminded me of how relentless they can be."
Daniel kissed the top of my head, holding me tighter. "They are relentless, but they are also desperate. Richard knows he is drowning. He is thrashing in the water, hoping to pull Juliet down with him."
"We won't let him," I murmured.
"No, we won't," Daniel agreed. He pulled back slightly, lifting my chin so I had to look into his eyes. "But I also need to make sure you are okay. You throw yourself entirely into the fire for these clients, Nora. You take their pain and make it your own."
"It's the only way I know how to fight," I said, a faint smile touching my lips. "If I don't stand between them and the monsters, who will?"
Daniel leaned down and, just like he did every single morning, pressed a soft, lingering kiss against the faint pink scar beside my nose. It was his silent vow, his constant reminder that I was safe, loved, and unbroken.
"You are the strongest person I have ever known," Daniel whispered against my skin. "But you don't have to carry the entire world alone. I am right here with you. We built the Vanguard Agency together. We fight the monsters together."
I closed my eyes, letting his words anchor me. In the chaotic, violent world of high-stakes advocacy, Daniel was my absolute north star. He was the safe harbor I returned to when the storms raged.

"Thank you," I breathed, feeling the tension finally drain from my shoulders. "I love you."
"I love you too," he smiled, turning back to the stove. "Now, eat your dinner. Tomorrow, we depose a billionaire, and you need your strength."
