Chapter 14 - A New Beginning in the Sun

Three months passed since that horrific night, and my life had completely transformed, like a flower moved from toxic soil to a place filled with light.

Our real reception was held in a small, beautiful garden behind the courthouse, right after I completed my facial reconstruction surgery.

There were no massive crystal chandeliers. No towering champagne pyramids. No ostentatious displays of white roses. The gathering had only warm sunlight, a gentle breeze carrying the scent of grass, a refreshing lemon cake, and most importantly, people who loved without invoices.

My father, Frank Hale, faced with an mountain of undeniable evidence, pled guilty to assault and financial fraud to secure a plea deal. My mother, Patricia, lost the house she had decorated with money stolen from me. And Tyler, my gambling-addict brother, was ordered by the court to enter a rehabilitation facility after his bookie testified against the family.

The empire of lies and exploitation had completely crumbled.

Daniel and I never bought a Cadillac. Instead, we used that money, along with a portion of his wealth, to fund a legal aid grant. This grant provided free legal representation to help women rebuild their credit and lives after having their identities stolen by family.

On quiet mornings, when the sun filters through the curtains, Daniel kisses the faint scar beside my nose. Every now and then, the memory of the cold marble, the blood, and my mother’s smile flashes back.

But I am no longer afraid. I look around our peaceful kitchen, take a deep breath, and breathe freely.

They broke my face.

But they finally saw my spine.
