She painted the walls a brilliant, pristine white.
She hung warm, amber lights from the high ceilings.
She brought in massive, blank canvases and set up wooden easels.
This was not just going to be a gallery. It was going to be an open studio. A place for people who had forgotten how to speak, to learn how to shout in color.
On the final night of renovations, she ordered takeout and sat cross-legged on the floor, eating noodles from a cardboard box.
She looked around at what she had built with her own two hands.
