CHAPTER 26 — The Morning Light
The apartment smelled of fresh paint and dark roast coffee.
Sunlight cut through the uncurtained windows, spilling across the bare hardwood floor.
She sat at the small kitchen table.
One mug.
One chair.
Silence.
It was not the heavy, suffocating silence of an empty house.
It was the expansive, echoing silence of freedom.
She took a sip from her mug.
The coffee was bitter, hot, and grounding.
She looked at the empty walls around her. They were completely bare.
Waiting.

She didn't need to fill them immediately.
For the first time in years, she was comfortable with the empty space.
