Chapter 33 - The EchoTwo weeks into the renovations, the past tried to knock on her door.

She was painting the window trims when her cell phone buzzed on a nearby stepping stool.
An unknown number flashed on the screen.
Usually, an unknown number would send her heart racing into her throat. She would imagine the worst-case scenario. The threats. The manipulation.
She wiped a streak of white paint from her forehead with the back of her hand and picked up the device.
She answered.
"Hello?"
Silence on the other end. A heavy, breathing silence that she recognized instantly.
It was him.
A year ago, that silence would have made her collapse. She would have apologized for things she hadn't done.
Now, she just felt... nothing.
"If you have something to say, say it," she stated, her voice as hard and clear as newly cut glass. "My time is expensive."
More silence. Then, the faint sound of a sharp intake of breath.
But she didn't wait for his words.
She moved her thumb, pressed the red button, and blocked the number.
She tossed the phone onto a drop cloth, picked up her paintbrush, and went right back to work.
