Chapter 6 - An Unexpected Visitor

|

Corbin retreated into the shadowy alcove beneath the apartment stairwell just as the front door swung open.

Richard Sterling stepped into the foyer, shaking the rain from his expensive umbrella. He adjusted his silk necktie, looking around the grimy entrance with visible disgust.

Sterling didn't look at the mailboxes. He walked straight past the alcove where Corbin held his breath, his shiny leather shoes loud against the worn wooden steps as he began ascending to the third floor.

What is my family’s attorney doing here? Corbin thought, his heart hammering against his ribs. Why is Richard Sterling visiting my housekeeper’s apartment on a Tuesday afternoon?

Corbin waited until Sterling reached the second-floor landing before creeping up the stairs behind him, keeping his steps entirely weightless.

He reached the third floor just as Sterling knocked firmly on door 3B.

Inside, the faint crying of baby Austin stopped. The lock clicked, and the door opened a few inches, kept on a brass security chain.

“Mr. Sterling?” Lianna’s voice drifted into the hallway, tight with immediate fear. “What are you doing here? I told you on the phone last month that I don't want to speak to you.”

“Open the door, Lianna,” Sterling said, his tone icy and authoritative. “We need to discuss your father-in-law’s estate, and the blue envelope your late husband left in your care.”
