Chapter 16 - The Boardroom Reckoning

|

By nine o'clock, the high-floor conference room was filled with Stanford Development’s twelve board members.

Uncle Marcus Stanford sat near the head of the long glass table, sipping black coffee and looking annoyed by the sudden, unscheduled summons. Beside him sat Richard Sterling, looking noticeably pale and nervous, his eyes darting toward the door.

The heavy double doors swung open, and Corbin walked in, followed by Sarah Vance and two uniformed officers from the Rhode Island State Police.

The room fell into an instant, confused silence.

“Corbin, what is the meaning of this theater?” Marcus snapped, standing up from his chair. “Why are state troopers in our executive boardroom?”

Corbin walked to the head of the table, placing the old blue envelope squarely in the center of the glass surface.

“Four years ago,” Corbin began, his voice echoing with absolute authority, “a young site engineer named Ethan Prescott died on the Harbor Tower construction site.”

Marcus’s face stiffened instantly. Sterling gripped the edge of his chair, his knuckles turning white.

“We were told it was an unfortunate accident,” Corbin continued, looking at every board member in the room. “We were told the widow accepted a standard settlement. But what you were never told was that Ethan Prescott was murdered by corporate greed.”

Corbin pressed a button on the conference room remote.

The large projection screen flashed to life, displaying the bank transfers linking Marcus Stanford and Richard Sterling to the diluted concrete suppliers, followed by high-resolution scans of Ethan’s handwritten safety logs.
