Chapter 20 - The Unopened Vault

Lianna leaned over the desk, her breath catching as she stared at the brass key.
“What is that?” she whispered.
Corbin picked up the faded slip of paper accompanying the key. On it, in Ethan’s precise engineer's handwriting, was a single sentence:
'If anything happens to me, look in Box 412 at the Industrial Trust Vault. The real truth about Arthur Stanford is inside.'
Corbin stared at his father’s name written on the slip of paper. His heart dropped into his stomach.
Arthur Stanford. His late father.
All this time, Corbin had believed his father was merely an innocent bystander who had been duped by Uncle Marcus and Attorney Sterling. But Ethan’s final hidden message suggested something far more sinister.
An hour later, as night fell over Providence, Corbin and Lianna stood inside the deep, underground safety deposit vault of the historic Industrial Trust Building downtown.
The vault custodian turned his master key in lock #412, stepped back, and allowed Corbin to insert the brass key.
The heavy steel box clicked open.
Corbin pulled the long metal drawer out and set it on the marble counter.
Inside rested a second leather-bound journal, alongside a stack of dated financial ledgers bearing his father Arthur Stanford’s personal wax seal.
Corbin slowly opened the journal to the first page.
As he read the opening lines written in his late father’s handwriting, Corbin’s phone rang inside his coat pocket—an unknown, restricted caller ID.
Corbin answered, pressing the phone to his ear while staring down at the ledgers.
A raspy, unfamiliar voice whispered through the speaker:
“Put the box back, Corbin... or baby Austin won't be the only one who grows up without a father.”

The line went dead.
Corbin stood frozen in the cold light of the underground vault, holding the brass key in one hand and the phone in the other, as the dark truth of his family’s past opened a door to an even deadlier game.
