Chapter 18 - Beyond the Wages

One week later, the morning sun broke brightly over Providence, clearing away the lingering mist.

A slick black corporate sedan pulled up to the faded brick apartment building in South Providence. Corbin stepped out, holding a sleek leather briefcase, and walked up the steps to apartment 3B.

He knocked gently.

The door opened to reveal Lianna, dressed in a simple, elegant navy blue dress. She looked healthy, rested, and her eyes were bright. Baby Austin was gurgling happily in a brand-new stroller near the doorway.

“Good morning, Corbin,” she said, offering a warm smile.

“Good morning, Lianna,” Corbin replied, stepping into the hallway.

He opened his briefcase and pulled out a set of official legal documents bearing the state seal.

“The foundation papers are finalized,” Corbin explained, handing her the documents. “The Ethan Prescott Memorial Foundation is officially registered. As of today, you are appointed as the Chief Executive Director, with full authority over all grant distributions and safety oversight programs.”

Lianna stared at the document, her hand covering her mouth in disbelief.

“Corbin... I don't know what to say...” she stammered. “A director? I don't have a business degree...”

“You have something far more valuable, Lianna,” Corbin said softly, looking at her with deep respect. “You have integrity. You know the true value of human life, and you will never let another family suffer the way yours did.”

He handed her a set of silver keys attached to a blue leather fob.

“And this,” Corbin added, “is the key to a townhouse overlooking the bay near East Providence. It’s registered under Austin’s name. A gift from the Stanford estate.”
