Chapter 1 - The Whispered Plea

The rain tapped relentlessly against the towering stained-glass windows of Corbin Stanford’s Providence estate, casting long, somber shadows across the marble foyer. At thirty-eight, Corbin was a man accustomed to the concrete and steel of multi-million-dollar real estate deals, but that morning, his vast house felt overwhelmingly empty.
As he walked down the carpeted hallway toward the kitchen, holding a stack of blue-printed construction schematics, he caught the soft, trembling sound of a voice. He stopped right outside the archway.
Inside, Lianna Prescott stood near the stainless-steel counter, a phone pressed tightly to her ear. Her knuckles were white. She was still wearing her wet raincoat over her plain gray housekeeper’s uniform.
“Mom, I really hate asking again, but… could you lend me twenty-eight dollars?” Lianna whispered.
Corbin held his breath, pulling back into the shadows of the corridor.
There was a long pause on the line before Lianna spoke again, her voice cracking with desperation.
“Austin’s formula is almost gone,” she continued softly. “I thought what we had would last until Friday, but I checked this morning, and there’s barely any left. Please don’t take money out of your own grocery budget. If I have to, I’ll figure out something else.”
Corbin felt a strange, cold knot form in his stomach. To him, twenty-eight dollars was loose change left in a cup holder or the cost of an forgotten espresso order. Yet here stood the woman who kept his home immaculate, practically begging for a handful of paper bills to feed her infant son.

“I’ll pay it back as soon as my paycheck comes in,” Lianna added, wiping a tear from her cheek before taking a ragged breath. “I promise.”
Corbin quietly backed away from the archway, his boots silent against the hardwood floor. He walked into his study and shut the heavy oak door, the quiet plea echoing in his mind like a thunderclap.
