Chapter 10 - Confrontation in the Rain

The wooden door frame splintered with a deafening crack, swinging wide open and slamming against the interior wall.
Lianna let out a startled gasp, dropping the blue envelope onto the table and backing toward the crib.
Richard Sterling spun around, his face morphing from arrogance to pure, unadulterated terror as he saw who was standing in the doorway.
“Corbin?” Sterling gasped, his voice losing all its power. “What... what are you doing here?”
Corbin stepped into the apartment, his face a mask of cold rage. He was taller than Sterling by half a head, and his presence filled the small room.
“I was following my housekeeper to make sure she was okay,” Corbin said, his voice deadly quiet. “But it turns out I came just in time to hear my family’s lawyer threatening to steal a baby.”
Sterling swallowed hard, trying frantically to regain his composure. He smoothed his suit coat with trembling hands.
“Corbin, my boy... you don't understand,” Sterling stammered, stepping between Corbin and the table. “This is company business. Legacy business. Your father asked me to handle this years ago to protect your inheritance!”
Corbin looked past Sterling, catching Lianna’s eyes. She was holding baby Austin tightly against her chest, staring at Corbin with wide, terrified eyes, completely bewildered as to why her wealthy employer was standing in her living room.
“Get out, Richard,” Corbin said smoothly.
“Corbin, listen to reason—”

“Get out of this apartment before I throw you down those stairs myself,” Corbin repeated, his tone dropping an octave.
Sterling looked at Corbin’s clenched fists, realized he had lost control of the situation, grabbed his briefcase, and rushed out the door into the rain.
