Chapter 6: The Shocked Silence of the Crowd

For several agonizing seconds, not a single person moved. The guests stood frozen in their tracks, scattered across the stairs and the perimeter of the hall like statues of disbelief. Some had their hands pressed against their cheeks; others stared blankly at the crumpled figure lying motionless on the floor. The shock was so profound that cognitive processing stalled across the room. People whispered in broken, disbelieving fragments, asking one another if what they had just witnessed was truly real.

The woman in the red dress stood near the top of the stairs, her chest heaving slightly, though her expression had already shifted from active rage to a chilling, detached calm. She looked down at her handiwork with an eerie lack of remorse, adjusting her posture as if she had merely dropped a glass rather than pushed a human being down a flight of stone stairs. Beside her, a man in a sharp grey suit stared down with a complex mix of shock and cautious calculation, refusing to intervene or express immediate panic.

The collective paralysis of the crowd highlighted the insular, cowardly nature of high society. Accustomed to handling scandals in boardrooms or through quiet settlements, none of them knew how to react to raw, physical violence executed in broad daylight. They were trapped in a collective nightmare, waiting for someone else to break the spell and take charge of the horrific situation unfolding at their feet.
