Chapter 24: Victoria's Failing Facade

In the upstairs drawing-room, Victoria paced like a caged tiger. The red silk of her dress rustled angrily as she barked orders at her lawyer over the phone.
"It was an accident! She tripped on her hem," she hissed, though her hands shook violently. "You need to get me out of here before this turns into a media circus."
But the heavy oak doors swung open, and three officers stepped inside. There was no deference to her wealth, no hesitation in their stride. Victoria’s arrogant facade began to crack as the Miranda rights were read to her in a monotonous, inescapable rhythm. She looked out the window, seeing the flashing red and blue lights painting her immaculate manicured lawns. The realization dawned on her: the money, the influence, the power—none of it was going to stop the reckoning that was currently speeding in an ambulance toward the city hospital.
