Chapter 21: The Final Step

The grand foyer of the estate was a symphony of clinking crystal and hushed, wealthy murmurs—until the scream tore through the ambient elegance. Elara, draped in a delicate lilac gown, stood at the precipice of the grand marble staircase. The argument had escalated in hushed, vicious tones, hidden in plain sight from the gala below. Victoria, her silken red dress practically radiating malice, had cornered her. The resentment that had simmered for years finally boiled over.

"Please, stop!" Elara had begged, her voice trembling. But there was no reasoning with a woman backed into a corner of her own lies.

With a sudden, violent shove, Victoria’s hands struck Elara’s shoulders. Time seemed to fracture. The guests below looked up just in time to witness the horrifying descent. Elara’s body tumbled, a blur of lavender silk and terrifying impacts against the unforgiving stone. The sickening thuds echoed over the classical music, silencing the room instantly. When she finally came to a rest at the base of the stairs, limbs splayed unnaturally and breath shallow, the silence was absolute—broken only by the collective, horrified gasp of a hundred paralyzed onlookers. Above, Victoria stood frozen, her hands still suspended in the air, a mask of cold shock slipping over her face.
