Chapter 6 - The Ghost of Celeste|

By her fourth day at Belandi Manor, Evelyn had established a quiet routine with the children. They didn't speak another word, but they allowed her to brush their hair, read them stories, and hold their hands during walk on the estate grounds.

Yet, a dark shadow hung over the house.

Late one evening, after the triplets were fast asleep, Evelyn walked down the quiet hallway toward the estate library to return a book of fairy tales. As she passed a set of double oak doors, she heard hushed, aggressive voices from within.

"The docks in Brooklyn are secured, Boss," a heavy male voice said. "But the police are reopening the inquiry into Celeste's disappearance."

Evelyn froze in the shadows outside the door.

"Let them inquire," Adrien’s voice replied, cold and unyielding. "They won't find anything."

"Dominic is getting nervous," the first voice continued. "He thinks if the federal agents start digging into the old accounts from two years ago, they'll trace the twelve million."

"Dominic needs to keep his mouth shut and do his job," Adrien growled. "Celeste took that money and fled to Europe. The case is closed."

"Is it, Boss? What if she comes back? What if the kids remember something?"

There was a long, terrifying pause inside the room.

"The kids don't remember anything," Adrien said, though his voice sounded hollow, heavy with an unspoken pain. "If they did... they wouldn't be silent."

Evelyn backed away slowly, her heart hammering against her ribs.
