Chapter 11 - Eyes in the Shadows|

Executing a plan inside a house monitored by armed mobsters was nearly impossible, but fate gave Evelyn an opportunity at midnight.
A urgent fire alarm sounded at one of Belandi's shipping warehouses near the docks. Adrien and most of his senior guards rushed out of the estate, leaving only a skeletal security crew behind.
Evelyn waited until one o'clock in the morning.
She dressed in dark clothing, slipped the tiny brass key into her pocket, and tiptoed out of her bedroom. She checked on the triplets first—all three were sleeping peacefully in their beds.
Slinking down the back service staircase, she avoided the main security cameras that she had carefully memorized over the past few weeks.
She reached the basement level. The wine cellar was dark and quiet.
Evelyn navigated through the rows of wine racks until she reached the heavy iron door set into the stone cliff wall. Her heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
She pulled the tiny brass key from her pocket and inserted it into the old deadbolt.
It fit perfectly.
Evelyn turned the key. The rusted iron mechanism groaned softly in the dark before clicking open.

She pushed the heavy door inward. A wave of cold, damp air smelling of saltwater, mold, and old paper rushed out to meet her.
Evelyn pulled a small penlight from her pocket, clicked it on, and stepped over the stone threshold into the dark unknown below.
