Chapter 1 - The Whispered Word|

The Grand Aurelia had never been so quiet. Not when the cellar flooded, not when the health inspectors arrived, and not even on the night two syndicate bosses met in the back room and left without shaking hands. The piano had stopped mid-phrase. Every waiter, busboy, and guest in evening silk turned toward Table Nine.

Evelyn Hart felt the sudden shift as a cold pressure behind her eyes.

She had been carrying the heavy silver tray for eleven hours straight. Her feet were numb, and the overdue electricity bill sat folded in her apron pocket like a sharp little stone. At twenty-six, Evelyn survived by keeping her head down and her hands steady.

Then the smallest of the three children looked up at her.

The Belandi triplets had been sitting in the private dining area for an hour. Evelyn had served them twice—water, then fresh bread—but no one ate. Two boys in identical navy blazers, Leo and Noah, sat stiffly alongside their sister, Mia, whose dark curls were pinned with a small silver clip. They looked like three little porcelain statues, silent and unmoving.

Behind them hovered a terrified nanny. At the head of the table sat Adrien Belandi.

Adrien did not need guards to command a room. He was thirty-seven, dressed in a sharp black suit with dark tattoos creeping up his neck. He ruled the city’s shipping docks with an iron fist. People whispered that his name could open doors that had been bricked shut for decades.

They also whispered about his wife, Celeste, who had vanished two years ago with twelve million dollars, leaving her three young children behind. Since that day, the triplets had not uttered a single sound. Specialists from across the globe had failed to break their silence.

Until Mia reached out, caught the edge of Evelyn’s stained apron, and whispered a single, raspy word.

"Sellar."

The silver tray in Evelyn's hands trembled, the glass water pitch knocking against the metal rim with a sharp, echoing ring.
