Chapter 9 - The Precipice of Evil

|

"Nobody will ever believe a thieving maid," Valeria whispered into Rosa’s ear, her voice dropping into a spine-chilling purr.

Rosa looked into Valeria’s eyes and saw true evil. "What... what are you doing?"

"Cleaning house," Valeria replied softly.

Without a single shred of mercy, hesitation, or human remorse, Valeria placed both of her hands firmly against the center of the old woman’s chest.

And shoved.

Rosa’s worn shoes lost all traction on the slick marble floor.

The violence of the push was so sudden and powerful that Rosa didn't even have time to reach out and grab the metal handrail. Her fral body was launched backward into the open air.

The papers slipped from her grip, scattering into the drafty hallway like white birds caught in a storm.

"Nooooo!" a frantic, terrified scream erupted from Rosa’s throat as she felt the ground disappear beneath her feet.

Time seemed to slow down into a nightmarish crawl.

As she fell backward into the abyss, Rosa looked up and saw Valeria leaning over the top railing. The mistress was smiling—a twisted, sadistically triumphant grin that revealed her complete lack of a soul.

Then came the impact.

CRACK!

Rosa’s lower back slammed with terrifying force against the sharp edge of the tenth marble step. Pain exploded through her spine like a white-hot knife, robbing her of her breath.

But gravity was far from finished with her.

Her body bounced uncontrollably, tumbling head over heels down the remaining twenty steps. Her head, shoulders, and knees cracked violently against the hard, unyielding stone with every agonizing rotation.

The sickening sound of breaking bones and dull thuds echoed through the empty mansion, drowning out even the sound of the rain outside.
