Chapter 2 - The Heart of a Servant

Despite the toxic atmosphere created by the young mistress of the house, Doña Rosa endured every humiliation without a single word of complaint. Her silence was not born of weakness, but of profound loyalty and desperate necessity.
Deep in the rural south, Rosa’s nine-year-old granddaughter, Sofia, was battling a severe chronic respiratory illness. The specialized treatments and monthly prescriptions were astronomical, far exceeding what a normal pensioner could ever afford. Every peso Rosa earned at the mansion was wired directly to the pediatric clinic treating the little girl.
"Just a few more months, my sweet girl," Rosa whispered to a small, worn photograph of Sofia that she kept tucked inside her apron pocket. "Grandma will make sure you get your medicine."
Every morning began at five o'clock. Rosa scrubbed the vast marble floors, polished the mahogany railings, and tended to Valeria's absurd personal requests.
"Rosa!" Valeria’s voice echoed down the corridor like a whip cracking against glass.
The young mistress stood in the doorway of her dressing room, pointing at a pair of designer heels.
"There is a smudge on the leather," Valeria barked, her eyes narrowing with malice. "Do you need stronger glasses, old woman, or are you simply becoming useless?"
"I will clean them immediately, Madame," Rosa said quietly, bowing her head.

"You're slacking because Fernando coddles you," Valeria stepped closer, her perfume choking the narrow hallway. "Remember your place in this house. You are a paid shadow. One word from me, and you'll be sleeping on the street without a cent to your name."
Rosa kept her eyes fixed on the floor, swallowing her pride. She knew that if she lost this job, Sofia’s treatments would stop. She was willing to bleed for her family, completely unaware that her unwavering loyalty was about to drag her into a deadly trap.
