Chapter 4 - Shreds of Betrayal

Rosa froze, her hands hovering over the trash bin.
The St. Jude Pediatric Oncology Center was the very institution Don Fernando had personally funded for over a decade in loving memory of his late first wife. Every month, millions of dollars were funneled from his personal charitable foundation to cover free cancer surgeries for impoverished children.
Rosa was not a nosey woman. In forty years of domestic service, she had never read a private letter or peeked into a confidential folder. But the sight of that medical logo raised an unsettling feeling in her chest.
Wiping her damp hands on her apron, Rosa gently retrieved the crumpled paper and adjusted her reading glasses.
As her eyes scanned the bold black text, the air vanished from her lungs.
LEGAL NOTICE OF IMMEDIATE TERMINATION AND ASSET SEIZURE.
It was not a letter of gratitude or an update on medical equipment. It was a formal legal notice from the hospital’s board of directors, declaring that the foundation’s primary endowment accounts had been completely drained. Over four million dollars intended for life-saving chemotherapy treatments had vanished over the past six months.
"Mother of God..." Rosa whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Frantic now, Rosa reached deeper into the wastebasket, pulling out more torn strips and crumpled printouts, ignoring her own strict code of ethics. She pieced them together across the mahogany desk like a horrifying puzzle.
Bank records. Offshore transfer receipts from accounts in the Cayman Islands. Personal wire confirmations.

Every single document bore the signature of Madame Valeria Santacruz, along with the name of an unknown male co-signatory registered in Zurich, Switzerland.
Valeria was not merely spending Fernando’s wealth on designer clothes and diamond necklaces. She was systematically embezzling millions from a children's cancer charity to pay off massive illegal gambling debts and finance an affair with a secret lover overseas.
