Chapter 1 - The Palace of Cold Stone

|

The Santacruz estate was not built to be a home; it was erected as a fortress of cold, blinding vanity. Perched upon the highest crest of the city’s most exclusive neighborhood, its high white stone walls separated two entirely different worlds. Inside, polished Italian marble stretched across every floor like a frozen lake, reflecting the harsh glow of a massive Bohemian crystal chandelier that hung from the grand foyer's ceiling—a monstrosity weighing half a ton and costing more than a luxury apartment.

At the center of this golden cage ruled Madame Valeria Santacruz.

At thirty-five, Valeria was a vision of artificial perfection. She possessed the statue-like silhouette of a runway model, sharp cheekbones, and eyes as cold and gray as winter steel. Draped in tailored Italian silk and coated in a suffocating trail of expensive vanilla perfume, she treated every human interaction as a transaction of power.

To Valeria, humanity was divided into two distinct castes: those with enough wealth to command, and those born to kneel. At the very bottom of her ruthless social ladder stood Doña Rosa.

Rosa was sixty-eight years old, her hair as white as driven snow, her hands scarred and calloused by forty years of unrelenting labor. She had served the Santacruz family long before Valeria ever set foot in the mansion. She had wiped the scraped knees of Don Fernando’s children from his first marriage and maintained the estate with quiet dignity.

To Fernando, the wealthy owner of a global logistics empire, Rosa was the heart of the house—a maternal figure he treated with deep respect and warmth.

"Good morning, Rosita," Fernando said gently as he crossed the foyer, adjusting his silver cufflinks. "Please make sure you take your medicine today. You look tired."

"Thank you, Don Fernando," Rosa replied with a soft smile. "I am doing just fine."

Valeria, watching from the top of the grand marble staircase, sneered in disgust. She loathed the old woman. She hated the way her husband spoke to a servant with tenderness. That envy transformed into daily cruelty, fueling endless demands, verbal abuse, and unreasonable workloads designed to break the old woman's spirit.
