Chapter 19 - The Zurich Ledger

Valeria’s breath hitched in her throat. Her hand began to tremble against the plastic phone.
"Zurich...?" she whispered, her eyes darting nervously toward the guard standing near the door.
"Did you really believe that the four million dollars you embezzled from your husband’s charity belonged solely to you?" the man asked, leaning closer to the glass. "Did you think our syndicate backed your gambling debts out of the kindness of our hearts?"
"I... I was going to pay it back!" Valeria pleaded, her voice rising in panic. "The maid found the papers! My husband found out! They took everything! The court froze all my assets!"
"We know," the man replied coldly. "We watched the news. You failed your assignment, Valeria. You were supposed to secure the deed to Fernando's shipping ports in South America. Instead, you got caught pushing a servant down a flight of stairs like an amateur."
"Please!" Valeria sobbed against the glass. "Tell them to give me time! I can get the money back! I can convince Fernando—"
"Fernando has moved on," the man cut her off ruthlessly. "He has liquidated his offshore accounts and secured his empire behind ironclad trusts. He is completely untouchable."
The man reached into his inner suit jacket and pulled out a photograph, pressing it flat against the bulletproof glass.
Valeria gasped.
The photo showed the peaceful hacienda in Austin. In the frame, Don Fernando was smiling warmly as he sat beside Doña Rosa and little Sofia in the sunlit courtyard.
"Fernando has a new family now," the man whispered. "And more importantly... he transferred the master encryption keys of the Santacruz logistics network into a private trust registered under the name of that old woman."

Valeria stared at the photograph, her mind spinning out of control. "What...? Why would he do that?!"
"Because he trusts her with his life," the man replied. "Which means Doña Rosa is now sitting on the single most valuable logistics key in the Western hemisphere."
