An hour later, during a brief court recess, Lennox stepped out onto the wide granite steps of the federal courthouse.
The chilly autumn air greeted her face, fresh and clean. Below, news reporters were shouting questions, camera flashes flickered like silver lightning, and city buses rumbled down Dearborn Street.
She felt a soft vibration in her coat pocket.
Lennox pulled out her sleek new phone. An incoming text message appeared on the screen from a blocked international number.

Lennox froze on the granite steps.
She slowly reached her gloved left hand into the pocket of her trench coat. Her fingers brushed against a cold, hard, rectangular object.
She pulled it out.
It was a custom gold-plated USB drive, identical in design to the one she had used to tear down Paxton Greer’s empire. Attached to it was a small paper tag bearing a single line of text:
Contains the master keys to the New York Port Authority. The choice is yours.
Lennox stood in the middle of the crowded courthouse steps, looking down at the gold drive in her palm, then up at the bustling, dangerous, infinite city before her.
She did not look back at the courthouse doors.

A sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb at the bottom of the steps. The rear door swung open, waiting.
Lennox closed her fingers around the gold drive, tucked it deep into her coat, and took her first step down toward the street.
