Chapter 1 - Cold November Asphalt

The rubber soles of her new sneakers were soft and silent against the wet Chicago asphalt.
Lennox Aldrich didn't run. Running attracted attention, and attention was a currency she was done spending on Paxton Greer.
She walked three blocks north, her hands tucked deep inside the oversized wool trench coat she had pulled from the basement locker. Beneath it, the silver dress felt like cold armor against her skin. The left side of her face throbbed with a rhythmic, hot ache where Paxton’s palm had landed, but the pain was distant—a physical nuisance compared to the icy clarity in her mind.
She reached an unlit parking garage on LaSalle Street. Space 402 housed a dark gray sedan registered to an untraceable LLC she had created eighteen months ago.
She unlocked the door with a quiet chirp, slid into the driver’s seat, and pulled out a hardened laptop from beneath the passenger seat.
The metallic taste of blood still lingered on her tongue.
She inserted the small, cold rectangle of the encrypted USB drive into the side port.
"Know your place," she whispered into the dark cabin.
Her fingers danced across the mechanical keyboard with practiced, terrifying speed. Lines of green code cascaded down the black screen.
For three years, Paxton had believed she was just a gifted girl who kept his books clean out of loyalty. He never understood that Lennox had not built his empire to keep him safe from the federal government. She had built it to keep herself safe from him. Every account, every shell company in Wyoming, every offshore mailbox in Grand Cayman was wired with a digital kill switch.
Command executed: Protocol Zero.

"Your place was built on my math, Paxton," Lennox murmured, hitting the final execution key. "Now let's see how well you stand without it."
The screen flickered once, turned blue, and began the quiet, irreversible erasure of ninety million dollars.
