Chapter 10 - The Reckoning at LaSalle

|

At 10:30 AM, Paxton stumbled into the grand lobby of First Commercial Bank on LaSalle Street.

His coat was wet from the rain, his eyes bloodshot. He marched straight past the security guards toward the private office of the bank’s senior vice president, Harold Finch.

"Finch!" Paxton shoved the door open, startling the silver-haired banker. "Unlock my private safety deposit box! Right now!"

Finch slowly pushed his glasses up his nose, looking at Paxton with a mixture of pity and terror.

"I can't do that, Mr. Greer," Finch said quietly.

"What do you mean you can't?!" Paxton bellowed, leaning over the desk. "I've deposited twenty million dollars in this bank over the last three years! Open the vault!"

"The U.S. Attorney served a asset freezing order forty-five minutes ago, Paxton," Finch said, opening a drawer. "Every account associated with your name is locked by court order."

Paxton felt the room spin. He gripped the edge of the mahogany desk to keep from falling.

"However," Finch added, pulling out a thick ivory envelope, "Miss Aldrich dropped this off for you at seven this morning. She said you would come here when you realized you had nowhere else to go."

Paxton snatched the envelope from Finch’s hand, his fingers trembling violently as he tore it open.
