Chapter 18 - Shadows of the Past

|
At 4:00 PM, the rain returned to Chicago.
Lennox was reviewing a shipping manifest when her administrative assistant, a sharp young woman named Maya, knocked on her office door.
"Miss Aldrich?" Maya said, holding a heavy manila envelope wrapped in black string. "A courier just dropped this off at the front desk. He said it was urgent."
"Who sent it?" Lennox asked, frowning slightly.
"He didn't leave a name," Maya said, placing the envelope on the desk. "Just said it was from 'An old friend in New York'."
Lennox waited until Maya left the room before reaching for the envelope.
She untied the black string and slid the contents onto her desk.
Inside was a single glossy black-and-white photograph.
It showed Lennox standing near the emergency exit of Paxton’s building two weeks ago, dressed in her silver gown, holding her sneakers in her hand.
On the back of the photograph, written in dark blue fountain-pen ink, was a message:
Impressive math, Miss Aldrich. Paxton Greer was a small fish in a very large pond. The East Coast Syndicate has taken notice of your talents. We have a opening for a Chief Financial Officer who knows how to move mountains.
