Chapter 11 - Inside the Envelope

|
Inside the ivory envelope was a single piece of paper and a small, silver object.
Paxton pulled out the object first. It was a silver key on a plain wire ring—the spare key to the tiny one-bedroom apartment in South Chicago where Lennox had lived when he first hired her three years ago.
He unfolded the piece of paper.
It was an itemized receipt from an upscale boutique on Oak Street, dated three days ago.
Item: Designer Silver Evening Dress
Amount: $4,200.00
Purchased by: Paxton Greer
Across the middle of the receipt, stamped in bold red ink, were five words:
PAID IN FULL WITH INTEREST.
Beneath the stamp, written in Lennox’s precise, beautiful handwriting, was a short list:
The Detroit Docks (Seized)
The Wyoming Escrows (Dissolved)
The Penthouse Lease (Terminated)
Your Reputation (Destroyed)

Paxton collapsed into the chair across from Finch’s desk, the receipt crumpled in his fist.
He had thought he bought her with a four-thousand-dollar dress and a silver promise. He had never realized that every day she sat at his side, she was calculating the exact interest rate on his arrogance.
