Chapter 12 - THE SHADOW ON THE GLASS|

"Dominic Russo," Agent Vance said, stopping three feet from them. His face was pale, his eyes darting nervously around the crowded ballroom.

Dominic didn't flinch. He raised his champagne flute calmly. "Agent Vance. I assumed you were busy preparing Vincent Marro's indictment."

"Marro is dead," Vance said flatly.

A sudden, sharp quiet washed over the immediate circle of guests.

Nora felt her heart freeze. "What?"

"Ten minutes ago," Vance explained in a low, rushed whisper. "The transport van taking Marro and Chloe Marlow to the federal holding facility was broadsided by an armored truck on the Manhattan Bridge."

Dominic’s eyes narrowed into slits of lethal steel. "And Chloe?"

"She's gone," Vance said. "The doors were cut open from the outside using heavy equipment. Marro was executed on the spot, but Chloe was pulled into a speed boat waiting on the East River."

Nora clutched Dominic's forearm, her knuckles turning white against his wool jacket. "Who took her?"

"We found a signature left on the driver's chest," Vance said, reaching into his coat and pulling out a clear evidence bag. Inside was a small black iron token stamped with a double-headed falcon.

Dominic's face turned completely stone-cold. The relaxed, arrogant posture he had held all night vanished instantly.

"The Moretti Syndicate," Dominic growled under his breath.

"They aren't just after Marro's territory, Dominic," Vance warned, leaning closer. "They think Chloe still has the master passcodes to your European accounts. They think she's the key to your entire fortune."
