Chapter 10 - DESTINY'S LEDGER|

"Your father never mentioned it?" Dominic asked, his tone laced with wonder.

"He never talked about his time on the docks," Nora whispered, her mind racing. "He only said he left because the work got too dangerous after the dock fires."

"It wasn't a coincidence," Dominic murmured, standing up and walking around the table toward her. "My father searched for Arthur Hale for five years to reward him, but your father had changed his name and vanished into the city to keep you safe."

He stopped right beside her chair, looking down at her as if she were a miracle wrapped in simple silk.

"You didn't just walk into my penthouse three years ago as a maid, Nora," Dominic said softly. "You were brought here by a debt my family owed yours for two decades."

Nora looked up at him, tears welling in her hazel eyes. "He always told me that good deeds return to you, even if it takes a lifetime."

Dominic reached down, taking both of her hands into his. He pulled her gently up from her chair until she was standing inches from his chest.

"I thought I was testing Chloe," Dominic admitted, his thumb tracing the curve of her cheek. "I thought I was playing a game to see if love could survive poverty. But the universe was just waiting for me to wake up and see who was actually standing in the room."

Nora leaned her forehead against his lapel, breathing in the scent of cedar and expensive leather that she had come to associate with safety.

"Dominic," she whispered. "What happens to us now?"

"Now," Dominic said, kissing the top of her head, "I take you to the Grand Gala tonight. And I introduce the city to the woman who holds my heart."
