Chapter 9 - The Dawn of Truth
The federal raid was swift and absolute.
Commissioner Alvarez, Manuel’s contact, had not waited for the morning. After Manuel's call, he had mobilized a federal tactical unit and tracked Mateo's phone to protect them.
The cartel hitmen, realized they were outmatched by a federal helicopter and tactical units, surrendered within minutes.
Julian was found cowering in the kitchen cellar, his hands covered in dirt, weeping as the federal officers dragged him out in handcuffs.
As the sun began to rise over the hills of San Miguel de Allende, casting a warm, golden light over the dusty ranch, the nightmare finally came to an end.
The courtyard was filled with police cars, their red and blue lights flashing against the stone walls. Medical personnel were treating the wounded, while federal investigators secured the scene.
Mateo sat on the back of an ambulance, a warm blanket wrapped around his shoulders. Laura sat beside him, her head resting on his shoulder.
In front of them, Emiliano and Jimena were sitting together in the grass, sharing a bottle of juice. For the first time in a year, Emiliano was laughing. It was a small, quiet laugh, but it was the most beautiful sound Mateo had ever heard.
Commissioner Alvarez walked over, holding a clipboard.
"We've arrested Julian," Alvarez said. "And we've already dispatched a unit to Querétaro to arrest your sister, Rebeca. She's cooperating. She's giving us everything on the financial transactions Julian was hiding."
"What about the cartel?" Mateo asked.
"Julian lied to you, Mateo," Alvarez said gently. "There was no cartel debt. Laura's father was never involved with those people."
Mateo and Laura both looked up in shock. "What?"
"Julian was embezzling millions of pesos from his firm's high-profile clients," Alvarez explained. "He used your father-in-law's name as a scapegoat to cover his tracks. When he realized your father-in-law was going to discover the fraud, Julian staged Emiliano's kidnapping to distract the family and keep everyone quiet. He kept the boy as leverage. If anyone looked too closely at his finances, he was going to use the boy to silence you."

Laura covered her mouth, tears of anger and relief streaming down her face. "He did all of this... for money?"
"And to protect his reputation," Alvarez said. "He is a sociopath. But he will never see the light of day again. I promise you that."
