Chapter 28 - The Creaking Floorboards

Six months later.

The house in the quiet suburb of Guadalajara looked completely different, yet exactly the same. The bullet holes had been meticulously patched and painted over with a fresh, bright coat of yellow paint. The shattered windows were replaced, and new, vibrant drawings of dinosaurs, suns, and now a few very brave knights adorned the walls.

The financial freeze had been completely lifted. Hector’s brilliant cyber-intervention had not only restored their original funds but had mysteriously rerouted a substantial portion of Arturo’s illegal slush fund into an untraceable offshore trust in Emiliano and Jimena’s names. They would never have to worry about money again.

Arturo Vargas was currently serving consecutive life sentences in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, completely isolated from his remaining cartel contacts. The ghost of Querétaro was finally, permanently buried.

Mateo stood in the kitchen, brewing fresh coffee—not expensive cinnamon coffee, just regular black coffee in mismatched mugs.

He listened to the house.

The heavy, suffocating silence that used to plague their lives in Coyoacán was completely gone. The house was noisy. The television was blaring a cartoon in the living room. The washing machine was thumping rhythmically in the laundry alcove.

And beneath it all, the familiar, comforting sound of the old wooden floorboards creaking loudly.

It was the sound of Jimena chasing her brother down the hallway.

Emiliano had grown taller. The nightmares that used to wake him in the middle of the night had completely vanished. He was thriving in school, his gentle heart no longer burdened by the trauma of running from monsters. He knew that his father had fought the monsters in the dark, and that the monsters had lost.

Mateo poured two mugs of coffee and walked out onto the newly rebuilt back porch. The sun was shining brightly, casting a warm, golden glow over the green grass of the backyard.

Laura was sitting on a wooden bench, laughing as Emiliano and Jimena kicked a soccer ball back and forth across the yard. The ball missed the goal and bounced off the fence, but no one cared.
