Chapter 15 - Fortifying the Nest

The transformation of the noisy, slightly messy suburban house into a fortified bunker happened overnight. They couldn't rely on the local police; Arturo Vargas had deep pockets and corrupt contacts across the state. If they involved the authorities, the cartel would simply bribe a judge and attack them while they were tied up in legal red tape.

Mateo spent the evening driving to various hardware stores across Guadalajara, purchasing heavy-duty iron deadbolts, shatter-resistant window films, and a series of motion-sensor floodlights.

While Mateo reinforced the physical perimeter, Laura focused on the internal logistics. She sat Emiliano and Jimena down in the living room, projecting a calm, confident authority.

"We are going to play a new game," Laura told her children, holding their hands. "It's called the 'Shadow Game.' If mommy or daddy ever say the word 'Eclipse,' you are to immediately run to the master bedroom closet, lock the heavy door from the inside, and you do not make a single sound until we come to get you. Do you understand?"

Emiliano, whose nightmares had recently begun to fade, looked at his mother with wide, understanding eyes. He was too young to fight, but old enough to remember the darkness. "Is the bad man from the old house back?" Emiliano asked softly.

"A different bad man," Laura said honestly, refusing to lie to her son. "But he doesn't know how strong we are. And he doesn't know your father."

By 3:00 AM, the house was heavily secured. The colorful drawings of dinosaurs and suns still hung on the walls, but the windows were now covered in an invisible layer of bullet-resistant film. The creaky floorboards, which they had grown to love, were strategically mapped out in Mateo’s mind. They were no longer just a nuisance; they were an early-warning alarm system.

Mateo and Laura sat in the dark kitchen, drinking black coffee, a shotgun resting across Mateo’s lap.

"He won't wait long," Mateo whispered, watching the shadows in the backyard through a small crack in the curtains. "Arturo is driven by rage. He will want to strike while he thinks we are still vulnerable."

"Let him come," Laura said, sipping her coffee.
